India has one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. The Indian economy is growing at over 8% per annum, which has significantly increased the number of flyers. Increasing numbers of people take to air travel as compared to traditional modes of travel which may be considered time consuming. Thus the aviation industry is getting a boost from not just increased tourism, but growing domestic consumption as well. The country has witnessed huge growth in air travel to the Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities as business is fast moving to these areas as well. Air passengers in India are growing at a CAGR of 22% as per the latest study carried out by the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation. This has a direct impact on the growth of meals per day consumed on these flights.
With this macro-economic backdrop, IHC acquired SkyGourmet Catering Pvt. Ltd, a leading flight catering business in India, in July 2007. Initially focusing on one client, this business has grown exponentially, increasing the meals per day consumption at a CAGR of 45.3%. Currently it has an annual meal capacity of 9.5 million meals, which is set to increase to 58 million meals by 2012. In the first five cities of operation, Sky Gourmet has captured 83% of the domestic travel market. SkyGourmet is on a course to become the industry leader during the fiscal year 2008-2009.
SkyGourmet’s air catering facilities provide a strong backbone to IHC’s other operating businesses in restaurants and hotels.
